Threatening Suicide is Wrong Reason
to Take Ex Back

Dear Harlan,

An ex-girlfriend has said that she will kill herself if I do not get back with her. She said, "Listen to your heart," and I am. I made the right choice in breaking up with her, but I don't want her to kill herself. WHAT DO I DO?

Nameless

Dear Nameless,

Basically, she's saying she's nothing without you. I'm sure you're a good guy, but she IS something without you. And that's what she needs professional help to see. So tell her parents, tell her closest friends, tell anyone who can help her. If you're in school, tell a teacher, who will be required to tell her parents. If she's an adult, then find the people that love her most to help her. You can help her as a friend if you're able to do that. But don't date her. Put her in contact with people who can help her. And if she does hurt herself, you're not to blame. Depression, years of a poor self-image and her sickness are to blame.
